Here's the simple version: meprobamate already slows down your brain to ease anxiety, which can leave you feeling drowsy, relaxed, or a little foggy. Some of the natural compounds in sage appear to have their own mild calming, brain-slowing activity. Stack the two together and, in theory, you could feel more sleepy, dizzy, or slowed down than you'd expect from the medicine alone.

I want to be honest about the evidence here, though. This concern comes from lab and animal studies, not from real-world reports in people, so it's more of a theoretical caution. A bit of sage in your cooking is very unlikely to be a problem. Concentrated sage extracts or the essential oil are where I'd be more careful. If you use those regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor first.

Sage is a common kitchen herb that is generally safe in food amounts and is traditionally used for sore throats, digestion, sweating, and memory. Some early research is encouraging for sore throat and menopausal hot flashes, but most uses are not well proven. Concentrated extracts and the essential oil should be used carefully because high doses contain a compound called thujone, which can be harmful.

What Is Meprobamate Used For?

Brand names: Equanil, Miltown, Meprospan, Neuramate

Meprobamate tablets are used to manage anxiety disorders or to provide short-term relief of anxiety symptoms. It is intended for anxiety that rises to the level of a disorder — everyday stress and tension that most people experience generally do not require this type of medication.

Because its effectiveness beyond four months has not been well studied, meprobamate is typically used for a limited period of time, with a prescriber checking in regularly to decide whether continued use is still appropriate.
