Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTITHYROID DRUGS

Why this applies to Propylthiouracil, PTU

Propylthiouracil, PTU falls under ANTITHYROID DRUGS — the group Sea Moss interacts with.

Due to its iodine content, sea moss might alter the effects of antithyroid drugs.
Sea moss contains approximately 4-7 mcg of iodine per gram. Iodine in high doses has been reported to cause both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, depending on the individual's past medical history. Taking sea moss could theoretically alter the effects of antithyroid drugs.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind: you're taking propylthiouracil (PTU) to calm down an overactive thyroid, and sea moss is naturally loaded with iodine. Iodine is the raw material your thyroid uses to make hormone, so adding a concentrated, variable source of it can work against what PTU is trying to do. In simple terms, you could be hitting the gas and the brakes at the same time.

This concern is theoretical, based on how iodine behaves rather than solid studies in people, so don't panic. But because your thyroid is already a moving target, extra iodine could nudge your levels and bring back symptoms like a racing heart, jitteriness, or sweating, or swing you the other way. Please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before adding sea moss.

About Sea Moss

What is Sea Moss?

Sea Moss
  • Source of iodine and minerals
  • Thyroid support
  • Respiratory issues and cough
  • Digestive support
  • Skin and hair health
  • General immune and antioxidant support

Sea moss is a type of red seaweed that is naturally rich in iodine and several minerals, and it is popular as a 'whole-food' supplement. Strong human evidence for most of its health claims is lacking, and its high and variable iodine content can be a real concern, especially for people with thyroid problems. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, particularly if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a thyroid condition.

About Propylthiouracil

What Is Propylthiouracil Used For?

Brand name: Propylthiouracil

Propylthiouracil tablets are used to treat hyperthyroidism — a condition where the thyroid gland makes too much thyroid hormone. It is specifically indicated for patients with Graves' disease or toxic multinodular goiter who cannot tolerate methimazole (another antithyroid drug) and for whom surgery or radioactive iodine is not a suitable option.

It is also used to bring thyroid hormone levels under control before a patient undergoes thyroidectomy (thyroid surgery) or radioactive iodine therapy, again in patients who cannot tolerate methimazole. Because of its serious liver risks, propylthiouracil is generally a second-choice treatment — used when other options are not appropriate.
