Sea Moss and Desiccated Thyroid Extract

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

THYROID HORMONE

Why this applies to Desiccated Thyroid Extract

Desiccated Thyroid Extract falls under THYROID HORMONE — the group Sea Moss interacts with.

Due to its iodine content, sea moss might alter the effects of thyroid hormone.
Sea moss contains approximately 4-7 mcg of iodine per gram. Iodine in high doses has been reported to cause both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, depending on the individual's past medical history. Taking sea moss could theoretically alter the effects of thyroid hormone.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

If you take desiccated thyroid extract (like Westhroid or WP Thyroid), here's the wrinkle with sea moss. Your medication delivers a carefully measured dose of thyroid hormone, and sea moss adds extra iodine, the raw material your thyroid uses to make hormone on its own. Layering one on top of the other can nudge your thyroid balance off in either direction.

This concern is theoretical, based on how iodine behaves rather than firm studies, so try not to panic. Still, too much iodine can sometimes push you toward symptoms like a racing heart, jitteriness, or sweating, or in some people the opposite, leaving you tired and sluggish. Because thyroid dosing is precise, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Desiccated Thyroid Extract page

“Activated charcoal is the first thing I would flag for anyone taking desiccated thyroid extract (Westhroid, WP Thyroid). It binds the medication in the gut and can sharply cut absorption, and it shares the major rating with tiratricol, itself a thyroid hormone that stacks on top of your prescribed dose.”

About Sea Moss

What is Sea Moss?

Sea Moss
  • Source of iodine and minerals
  • Thyroid support
  • Respiratory issues and cough
  • Digestive support
  • Skin and hair health
  • General immune and antioxidant support

Sea moss is a type of red seaweed that is naturally rich in iodine and several minerals, and it is popular as a 'whole-food' supplement. Strong human evidence for most of its health claims is lacking, and its high and variable iodine content can be a real concern, especially for people with thyroid problems. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, particularly if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a thyroid condition.
