Sea Moss and Thyroid Hormone

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

THYROID HORMONE

Due to its iodine content, sea moss might alter the effects of thyroid hormone.
Sea moss contains approximately 4-7 mcg of iodine per gram. Iodine in high doses has been reported to cause both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, depending on the individual's past medical history. Taking sea moss could theoretically alter the effects of thyroid hormone.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

If you take a thyroid hormone like levothyroxine, your dose is carefully matched to what your body needs. Here's the thing about sea moss: it's loaded with iodine, and iodine is the raw material your thyroid uses to make its own hormones. Adding a lot of extra iodine on top of your medication can throw off that careful balance. Depending on your situation, it could nudge you toward feeling overactive (racing heart, jitteriness, trouble sleeping) or, oddly enough, underactive (fatigue, weight gain, feeling cold).

This concern is theoretical, based on how iodine behaves rather than solid studies with sea moss itself. Still, since thyroid dosing is so precise, I'd play it safe. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding sea moss, especially since its iodine amount varies batch to batch.

By severity: 2 major · 26 moderate · 10 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Thyroid Hormone page

“The riskiest pairing on this page is tiratricol, which is itself a thyroid compound, so taking it alongside thyroid hormone (Etwon) stacks two doses of the same signal. It shares the list's only two major ratings with activated charcoal, which soaks up medication in the gut before the body can absorb it.”

About Sea Moss

What is Sea Moss?

Sea Moss
  • Source of iodine and minerals
  • Thyroid support
  • Respiratory issues and cough
  • Digestive support
  • Skin and hair health
  • General immune and antioxidant support

Sea moss is a type of red seaweed that is naturally rich in iodine and several minerals, and it is popular as a 'whole-food' supplement. Strong human evidence for most of its health claims is lacking, and its high and variable iodine content can be a real concern, especially for people with thyroid problems. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, particularly if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a thyroid condition.
