Cisplatin falls under NEPHROTOXIC DRUGS — the group Siberian Cocklebur interacts with.

Siberian cocklebur can adversely affect the kidney. Theoretically, combining Siberian cocklebur with potentially nephrotoxic drugs might have additive harmful effects on kidney function.
Some potentially nephrotoxic drugs include cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune); aminoglycosides including amikacin (Amikin), gentamicin (Garamycin, Gentak, others), and tobramycin (Nebcin, others); nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) including ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Nuprin, others), indomethacin (Indocin), naproxen (Aleve, Anaprox, Naprelan, Naprosyn), piroxicam (Feldene); and numerous others.

Here's the thing about cisplatin: it's already one of the harder chemo drugs on your kidneys. Kidney damage is one of its best-known and most serious side effects, which is why your care team gives lots of IV fluids and watches your kidney bloodwork closely during treatment.

Siberian cocklebur can be toxic to the kidneys on its own. So if you stack it on top of cisplatin, the worry is that the two together could harm your kidneys more than either alone. That could show up as reduced urine, swelling, or worsening lab numbers. This is rated a major, likely concern, so I'd steer clear of cocklebur while on cisplatin. Please run any herbal product past your oncologist or pharmacist first.

About Cisplatin Injection

What Is Cisplatin Injection Used For?

Brand name: Platinol-AQ

Cisplatin Injection is used to treat three types of cancer. For metastatic testicular tumors and metastatic ovarian tumors, it is used as part of combination chemotherapy — alongside other approved cancer medicines — in patients who have already had surgery and/or radiation therapy. For metastatic ovarian tumors, it can also be used alone as a second-line treatment when standard chemotherapy has stopped working and cisplatin has not been tried before.

For advanced bladder cancer (specifically transitional cell bladder cancer) that can no longer be treated with surgery or radiation, Cisplatin Injection is used as a single agent.
