ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Aspirin, Caffeine, Orphenadrine
Aspirin, Caffeine, Orphenadrine falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Slippery Elm interacts with.
Slippery elm inner bark contains mucilage, which may interfere with the absorption of orally administered drugs.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with this combination pill (which blends aspirin, caffeine, and the muscle relaxer orphenadrine). Slippery elm forms a slick, gel-like coating in your gut. The concern, and it's only a theoretical one based on how the herb works, is that this gel could physically wrap around your pills and slow how much medicine your body soaks up. None of these ingredients is a prodrug, so the worry is simply getting a bit less effect, not too much.
In practice, that might mean your pain or muscle-spasm relief feels weaker than usual. To stay safe, a simple fix is spacing them apart, taking your medication a couple of hours before or after the slippery elm. Run the timing by your pharmacist or doctor to be sure.
