ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Enalapril Maleate
Enalapril Maleate falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Slippery Elm interacts with.
Slippery elm inner bark contains mucilage, which may interfere with the absorption of orally administered drugs.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to know about pairing slippery elm with your enalapril. Slippery elm forms a slick, gel-like coating in your gut, and the concern is that this layer could physically block some of your enalapril from being absorbed. If less gets in, your blood pressure medicine may not work as well, which could mean your numbers creep up.
I'll be honest with you: this is a theoretical worry based on how the gel behaves, not something proven in studies, so the real-world risk is probably small. To be safe, a simple fix is to space them out, taking your enalapril at least a couple of hours apart from the slippery elm. Run this by your pharmacist before you start, and don't change your dose on your own.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Enalapril Maleate page
“Potassium is the supplement I worry about first with enalapril maleate (Vasotec, Epaned). This ACE inhibitor, used for high blood pressure and heart failure, already makes the body hold onto potassium, so adding more can raise blood levels too far, a problem called hyperkalemia.”

About Slippery Elm
What is Slippery Elm?
- Sore throat and cough
- Heartburn and acid reflux
- Digestive upset and IBS
- Skin irritation (topical)
- Constipation or diarrhea
Slippery elm is a traditional herbal remedy made from the inner bark of a North American elm tree, used mainly to soothe sore throats and irritated digestive tracts. Its mucilage can coat and calm mucous membranes, but solid human evidence for most uses is limited. It is generally considered low-risk for short-term use, but you should still check with your pharmacist or doctor first.
About Enalapril
What Is Enalapril Used For?
Brand names: Vasotec, Epaned
Enalapril treats high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks.
It also treats symptomatic heart failure. It is used for asymptomatic left ventricular dysfunction (a weak pumping chamber of the heart without symptoms) to slow the development of overt heart failure and reduce hospital stays for heart failure. Enalapril oral solution (including Epaned) is labeled for high blood pressure in adults and children older than one month.
