Here's the basic concern with pairing slippery elm and hydroxyurea. Slippery elm's mucilage is a sticky, gel-like fiber, and the worry is that this gel could coat your gut and grab onto a pill, slowing how much of the medicine actually gets absorbed. With hydroxyurea, getting less into your bloodstream could mean it works less well, whether you take it for sickle cell disease (think more frequent painful crises) or for one of the cancers it treats.

I want to be honest though: this is theoretical, based on how the herb behaves rather than real cases in people. A simple, practical move is to separate them by a couple of hours so the elm isn't sitting on top of your dose. Since hydroxyurea is a serious medication, please run this by your pharmacist or oncologist before adding slippery elm.

Slippery elm is a traditional herbal remedy made from the inner bark of a North American elm tree, used mainly to soothe sore throats and irritated digestive tracts. Its mucilage can coat and calm mucous membranes, but solid human evidence for most uses is limited. What Is Hydroxyurea Used For?

Brand names: Droxia, Hydrea, Siklos, Xromi

Hydroxyurea is used for two main groups of conditions. Which one depends on the product.

  • Sickle cell anemia: Droxia (capsule), Siklos (tablet) and Xromi (oral solution) reduce the frequency of painful crises and the need for blood transfusions in people with recurrent moderate to severe painful crises.
  • Cancer: Hydrea and hydroxyurea capsules treat resistant chronic myeloid leukemia. They also treat locally advanced squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck (excluding the lip), used together with chemoradiation.

Age ranges differ by product. Siklos is for ages 2 and older. Xromi is for ages 6 months and older.
