There is some concern that stinging nettle might decrease the effects of anticoagulant drugs such as warfarin.
Stinging nettle contains a significant amount of vitamin K. When taken in large quantities, this might interfere with the activity of warfarin.

Here is the thing to know about warfarin: it works by blocking vitamin K, which your body needs to form clots. Stinging nettle naturally contains a fair amount of vitamin K, so loading up on it could push back against your warfarin and make it work less well. In plain terms, that could mean your blood clots a bit more easily than your dose intends, raising the risk of the very clots you are trying to prevent.

This concern is mostly theoretical and tied to large, concentrated supplement amounts, not an occasional culinary serving. Still, warfarin is very sensitive, and even small shifts can move your INR. Please don't start or stop nettle on your own. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor first, and keep your INR checks on schedule if anything changes.

What Is Warfarin Used For?

Brand names: Coumadin, Panwarfin, Sofarin

Warfarin sodium tablets and Jantoven tablets are both used to prevent and treat venous thrombosis (blood clots in the veins) and pulmonary embolism (a clot in the lungs). They are also used to prevent clot-related complications in people with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm) or who have had a heart valve replaced.

In people who have had a heart attack, warfarin is used to reduce the risk of death, another heart attack, stroke, or other clotting events. It does not dissolve an existing clot, but it helps prevent the clot from growing and stops new dangerous clots from forming.
