Levodopa, Carbidopa falls under DOPAMINE AGONISTS — the group Syrian Rue interacts with.

Theoretically, Syrian rue might increase the adverse effects of dopamine agonists.
Syrian rue contains the constituent harmine. Animal research shows that harmine increases extracellular dopamine levels. The clinical significance of this effect is unclear.

Here's the gist with this pair. Your levodopa/carbidopa combo works by boosting dopamine in the brain to ease Parkinson's symptoms (levodopa is actually converted into dopamine once it gets where it needs to go). Syrian rue contains harmala alkaloids that act like an MAO inhibitor, and in animal studies one of them (harmine) pushed dopamine levels up. So in theory, stacking the two could nudge dopamine activity even higher than intended.

If that happened, you might see more of levodopa's usual side effects: nausea, dizziness or low blood pressure when standing, confusion, vivid dreams, or extra fidgety movements (dyskinesia). I'll be honest, this is theoretical and the real-world impact isn't well studied. Syrian rue carries its own toxicity risks too. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing them.

What is Syrian Rue?
