Syrian rue contains beta-carboline alkaloids, including harmine, harmaline, harmalol, harmol, and harmane. In vitro research suggests that these beta-carboline alkaloids can inhibit CYP2D6 enzymes.

Here's the short version for Ingrezza (valbenazine). Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to help clear part of this medicine. Syrian Rue contains harmala alkaloids that, at least in lab studies, can block CYP2D6. If that enzyme is slowed down, valbenazine and its active form may build up higher than expected.

What that could look like in real life is more of the drug's known effects, like feeling drowsy, lightheaded, or in some cases changes in your heart's rhythm (QT prolongation). I'll be honest though: this concern is theoretical, based on test-tube data, not human studies. Even so, since Syrian Rue carries its own toxicity risks, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear valbenazine (Ingrezza) out of your system. Lab studies suggest the harmala alkaloids in Syrian Rue can slow that same enzyme down. If that happens, valbenazine could build up higher than expected, which may turn up its effects and side effects, things like drowsiness, dizziness, balance trouble, or a faster or irregular heartbeat (a QT change).

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's theoretical, drawn from test-tube work rather than real patient cases, so we don't know how big a deal it would be in practice. Syrian Rue also carries its own toxicity risks. Please don't start, stop, or adjust either one on your own. Run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

There is little reliable human evidence that it safely treats any condition, and it carries real risks of toxicity, so it is not recommended for self-treatment. What Is Valbenazine Used For?

Brand name: Ingrezza

Valbenazine — sold as Ingrezza and INGREZZA Sprinkle — is approved for two conditions in adults. The first is tardive dyskinesia, a movement disorder that causes uncontrolled, repetitive facial or body movements, often brought on by long-term use of certain psychiatric medications. The second is chorea associated with Huntington's disease, which refers to the involuntary, dance-like jerking movements that are a hallmark of that condition.

Both Ingrezza and INGREZZA Sprinkle are approved for both of these uses.
