Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Warfarin Sodium
Warfarin Sodium falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Syrian Rue interacts with.
Syrian rue contains beta-carboline alkaloids, including harmine, harmol, and harmane. In vitro research suggests that these beta-carboline alkaloids competitively inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with warfarin and Syrian Rue. Warfarin is partly cleared by an enzyme called CYP3A4, and lab studies suggest the harmala alkaloids in Syrian Rue can block that enzyme. If that happens in the body, warfarin could clear more slowly and build up, which may push your INR too high. The realistic worry there is easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or more serious internal bleeding.
I'll be honest: this is theoretical, based mostly on test-tube data, not solid human studies. But warfarin is a very dose-sensitive drug where even small shifts matter, so I wouldn't gamble on it. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing these, and keep up with your regular INR checks.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
- AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
- BCase-control study.

About Syrian Rue
What is Syrian Rue?
- Traditional remedy for digestive complaints
- Used as a sedative or for mood
- Antimicrobial and antiparasitic folk use
- Used as a dye and incense
- Recreational psychoactive use
Syrian Rue (Peganum harmala) is a traditional plant whose seeds contain potent compounds called harmala alkaloids, including MAO-inhibiting harmine and harmaline. There is little reliable human evidence that it safely treats any condition, and it carries real risks of toxicity, so it is not recommended for self-treatment. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before considering it.
About Warfarin
What Is Warfarin Used For?
Brand names: Coumadin, Panwarfin, Sofarin
Warfarin helps prevent and treat harmful blood clots. The label lists these uses for both Warfarin Sodium tablets and Jantoven tablets:
- Preventing and treating venous thrombosis (clots in the veins) and pulmonary embolism (clots in the lungs).
- Preventing and treating clot-related complications of atrial fibrillation and/or heart valve replacement.
- Lowering the risk of death, another heart attack, and clot-related events such as stroke after a heart attack.
Warfarin does not dissolve a clot that has already formed. It helps stop the clot from growing and prevents further clot-related complications.
