Why this applies to Tazemetostat Hydrobromide

Tazemetostat Hydrobromide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Tangerine interacts with.

In vitro, tangeretin, a constituent of tangerine, induces a 52% increase in the metabolism of midazolam by cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). This suggests that tangeretin may stimulate CYP3A4 activity. However, in humans, drinking tangerine juice 200 mL slightly delayed the absorption, but did not affect the metabolism, of midazolam, a CYP3A4 substrate. Theoretically, tangerine juice might increase CYP3A4 activity and decrease levels of drugs metabolized by this enzyme. However, this effect is unlikely.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include amitriptyline (Elavil), amiodarone (Cordarone), citalopram (Celexa), felodipine (Plendil), lansoprazole (Prevacid), ondansetron (Zofran), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), sertraline (Zoloft), sibutramine (Meridia), and many others.

Here's the gist with Tazverik (tazemetostat) and tangerine. Your body clears this cancer medicine partly through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. A compound in tangerine, called tangeretin, sped up that enzyme in lab tests, which in theory could push tazemetostat out of your system a little faster and make it work less well. But here's the reassuring part: in actual people, drinking tangerine juice didn't meaningfully change how a CYP3A4 drug was handled. So this is mostly a test-tube finding, not a real-world worry.

Enjoying a tangerine as food is very unlikely to cause a problem. Since tazemetostat is a serious cancer therapy, I'd still mention any concentrated citrus supplements to your oncology pharmacist before starting them.

What Is Tazemetostat Used For?

Brand name: Tazverik

Tazverik (tazemetostat) tablets are used to treat adults and patients aged 16 and older with metastatic or locally advanced epithelioid sarcoma (a rare soft-tissue cancer) that cannot be completely removed by surgery.

Tazverik is also used in adults with relapsed or refractory follicular lymphoma — meaning the lymphoma has come back or stopped responding to treatment — either when the tumor carries a specific EZH2 gene mutation (confirmed by an FDA-approved test) after at least two prior treatments, or when there are no other satisfactory treatment options. Both uses were approved based on response rates, and continued approval may depend on results from ongoing confirmatory studies.
