Butorphanol falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Tarragon interacts with.

Evidence from animal research suggests that tarragon essential oil can cause sedation and motor impairment when administered intraperitoneally at a dose of 1 mL/kg. Theoretically, concomitant use of tarragon with CNS depressants, including antihistamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, and tricyclic antidepressants, may increase sedative and other adverse effects.

Butorphanol (Stadol) is a strong pain reliever that already makes many people feel drowsy, foggy, or unsteady on their feet. The concern here is simple: tarragon, when used in concentrated forms like the essential oil, has shown sedative and coordination-slowing effects in animal studies. Stacked on top of butorphanol's own calming effect on the brain, the worry is that you could feel extra sleepy, dizzy, or out of it.

I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. It comes from animal research using the oil, not from people, so it's largely theoretical. The sprinkle of tarragon in your cooking won't do this. If you're using a concentrated tarragon supplement or oil while on butorphanol, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Butorphanol Injection Used For?

Brand name: Stadol

Butorphanol Tartrate Injection is used to manage pain severe enough to require an opioid when other treatments are not adequate. It is also used as a preoperative or pre-anesthetic medication and as a supplement to balanced anesthesia during surgical procedures.

Butorphanol Tartrate Injection is also indicated for relief of pain during labor in patients at full term in early labor. Because of serious risks including addiction, misuse, and overdose, it is reserved for situations where alternative treatments are ineffective or not tolerated.
