Tolcapone falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Vitamin A interacts with.

Theoretically, taking high doses of vitamin A in combination with other potentially hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of liver disease.
The tolerable upper intake level (UL) is the highest level of intake that is likely to pose no risk of adverse effects. Doses of vitamin A above the UL can cause hepatotoxicity, ranging from elevated liver enzymes to liver failure.

Here's the thing to know about tolcapone (Tasmar): it's one of the Parkinson's medicines that already comes with a serious warning about the liver. Doctors usually check your liver enzymes regularly while you're on it for exactly that reason. This isn't about vitamin A changing how tolcapone works, but about two things that can each stress the liver being used together.

High-dose vitamin A (above the recommended upper limit) can itself raise liver enzymes or, rarely, cause liver injury. Pairing that with tolcapone could, in theory, add up. This is expert-opinion caution, not proven, and normal food or a basic multivitamin amount is very unlikely to matter. Before adding a concentrated vitamin A supplement, please check with your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Tolcapone Used For?

Brand name: Tasmar

Tolcapone tablets (sold as Tasmar and as generic tolcapone) are used as an add-on therapy to levodopa/carbidopa for idiopathic Parkinson's disease — meaning Parkinson's that arises on its own, not from another cause. It is intended for patients who are experiencing symptom fluctuations and are not responding well to, or are not good candidates for, other add-on treatments.

Because of the serious risk of liver failure, tolcapone is reserved for patients who need additional symptom control and must be stopped within 3 weeks if it is not producing a clear benefit.
