Here's something important to know about tolcapone (Tasmar): it carries a serious warning about liver damage. In fact, people taking it need regular blood tests to keep an eye on liver function. That's why mixing it with wine deserves real caution.

Wine's main concern here isn't the grape compounds, it's the alcohol. Alcohol is hard on the liver, and stacking it on top of a drug that's already known to stress the liver can raise your risk of trouble. Warning signs to watch for include yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, unusual tiredness, nausea, or pain in the upper right belly. Please don't change anything on your own, but do talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether any alcohol is safe while you're on tolcapone.

What Is Tolcapone Used For?

Brand name: Tasmar

Tolcapone tablets (sold as Tasmar and as generic tolcapone) are used as an add-on therapy to levodopa/carbidopa for idiopathic Parkinson's disease — meaning Parkinson's that arises on its own, not from another cause. It is intended for patients who are experiencing symptom fluctuations and are not responding well to, or are not good candidates for, other add-on treatments.

Because of the serious risk of liver failure, tolcapone is reserved for patients who need additional symptom control and must be stopped within 3 weeks if it is not producing a clear benefit.
