Wine + Bupropion

Wine has a moderate interaction with Bupropion. Theoretically, concomitant use may increase the risk of adverse effects from alcohol.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
BUPROPION (Wellbutrin)
In patients taking bupropion, there have been rare reports of adverse psychiatric events or reduced alcohol tolerance. Additionally, in chronic alcohol users, abrupt discontinuation of alcohol while taking bupropion may increase the risk of seizure.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Mixing wine with bupropion is one of those combos where the caution is real but the evidence is thin. This isn't about your liver speeding up or slowing down the drug. It's more about how the two affect your brain together. There have been occasional reports of people on bupropion having a lower tolerance to alcohol, meaning a glass or two might hit harder than usual, or rarely some unusual mood or behavior changes.
The bigger concern is bupropion's known risk of seizures. If someone drinks heavily and then suddenly stops while on bupropion, that withdrawal can raise seizure risk. If you enjoy a drink now and then, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about what's safe for you. Don't start or stop anything on your own.

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Bupropion
This page covers Wine only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Bupropion page lists 46 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.
The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Adrafinil (moderate), African Wild Potato (moderate), Artichoke (moderate) and Astaxanthin (moderate).
By severity: 1 major · 33 moderate · 12 minor.
From our pharmacist’s overview on the Bupropion page
“Bupropion (Wellbutrin, Zyban) deserves genuine care around supplements, and the entry to understand first is activated charcoal, the only major-rated interaction on this list. Charcoal and similar bulk products can soak up the drug in the gut and blunt its effect, so space them well apart from your dose.”

About Wine
What is Wine?
- Social and relaxation use
- Heart health (popular belief)
- Antioxidant intake
- Aiding digestion (traditional use)
- Culinary flavoring
Wine is an alcoholic beverage made from fermented grapes and is not a true dietary supplement or medicine. Despite popular claims about heart benefits, the alcohol it contains carries real health risks, and no amount of drinking can be recommended to improve health. If you drink, do so in moderation, and avoid alcohol entirely during pregnancy or if you have certain medical conditions.

Bupropion Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Bupropion as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Wine — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
