First things first: European mandrake is genuinely toxic, and I would never recommend taking it. But here is the idea behind this interaction with your bupropion (Wellbutrin, Zyban). Mandrake's tropane alkaloids slow down how fast your gut moves things along. When your stomach and intestines empty more slowly, a pill like bupropion can sit longer and potentially be absorbed more fully, which could nudge its levels up.

This matters because bupropion already carries a known risk of seizures, especially at higher levels, plus jitteriness, insomnia, a racing heart, and dry mouth. Keep in mind this is a theoretical concern based on pharmacology, not proven cases. Still, please don't use mandrake, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining anything with bupropion.

It contains powerful poisons that can cause serious harm or death, and there is no proof it safely treats any condition. We strongly recommend you do not consume mandrake in any form.

What Is Bupropion Used For?

Brand names: Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR, Zyban, Wellbutrin XL, Aplenzin, Forfivo XL

Bupropion is FDA-approved to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) — a form of clinical depression. Extended-release formulations (XL and hydrobromide versions, including Aplenzin) are also approved for the prevention of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), the pattern of depression that tends to arrive in autumn and winter.

Not all formulations share every indication. Aplenzin (bupropion hydrobromide extended-release) and bupropion hydrochloride extended-release tablets (XL) are indicated for both MDD and SAD. Bupropion hydrochloride extended-release tablets (SR) and bupropion hydrochloride immediate-release tablets are indicated for MDD only.
