First, the honest headline: European mandrake is genuinely toxic and we don't recommend taking it at all, regardless of your thyroid medicine. With that said, here's how it could theoretically affect levothyroxine. Mandrake's tropane alkaloids slow down your gut, and a slower gut can mean your levothyroxine sits in the digestive tract longer and gets absorbed a bit more fully.

For a hormone like levothyroxine, where the dose is finely tuned, even small shifts in how much you absorb can matter. Getting a little more than your body is set for could nudge you toward overactive thyroid signs like a racing or pounding heart, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, or feeling too warm. This is a theory based on pharmacology, not proven cases, but please don't use mandrake. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Levothyroxine

What Is Levothyroxine Used For?

Brand names: Euthyrox, Levothroid, Unithroid, Synthroid, Levoxyl, Levo-T, Eltroxin, Estre, Levothyroxine, Novothyrox, Levolet

Levothyroxine replaces or supplements the thyroid hormone your body isn't making enough of. It's used for hypothyroidism — an underactive thyroid — in adults, children, and even newborns, whether the cause is the thyroid gland itself, the pituitary gland, or the hypothalamus in the brain.

It's also used alongside surgery and radioiodine treatment in people with certain types of thyroid cancer, to help suppress the hormone that can stimulate cancer growth. It is not meant for weight loss, treating benign thyroid nodules in people who have enough iodine, or for hypothyroidism during recovery from a temporary condition called subacute thyroiditis.
