First things first: please don't take European mandrake at all. It's genuinely toxic and can cause serious harm. Setting that aside, here's the idea behind this interaction. Mandrake's tropane alkaloids slow down how fast your gut moves. When food and pills sit in the digestive tract longer, certain oral medications can be absorbed more completely, which theoretically could raise their levels.

For oral or slow-release nitroglycerin, that might mean a bit more drug reaching your bloodstream than expected. With nitroglycerin, the main concern would be a stronger drop in blood pressure, plus headaches, dizziness, flushing, or feeling lightheaded when you stand up. Keep in mind this is theoretical, based on how these chemicals work, not proven in studies. Nitroglycerin is not a prodrug here. Please talk with your pharmacist or doctor before combining anything.

What Is Nitroglycerin Topical Used For?

Brand names: Nitrostat, Nitrogard SR, Sustachron, Nitro-Bid, Sustachron ER Buccal, Nitroglyn, Nitro Time, Nitrong, Nitrogard, Nitrocine Timecaps, Nitroquick, Rectiv, Gonitro

Rectiv (nitroglycerin ointment 0.4%, applied rectally) is specifically indicated to treat moderate to severe pain associated with chronic anal fissure — a small tear in the lining of the anal canal.

Nitro-Bid (nitroglycerin ointment, applied to the skin) has been used to reduce exercise-related angina (chest pain brought on by physical activity). These are distinct products with separate uses; they are not interchangeable.
