Here's the key thing about tolcapone (Tasmar): it carries a serious warning for liver damage. In fact, people taking it need regular blood tests to watch their liver enzymes. That's because tolcapone can be hard on the liver all on its own.

Now bring beer into the picture. Alcohol is also tough on the liver, so combining the two means you're stacking two liver stressors at once. That raises the chance of real liver injury, which can show up as fatigue, nausea, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or dark urine. This isn't just theory either, the warning is well established. The safest move with tolcapone is to avoid alcohol, but please confirm a plan with your doctor or pharmacist rather than changing anything on your own.

What Is Tolcapone Used For?

Brand name: Tasmar

Tolcapone tablets (sold as Tasmar and as generic tolcapone) are used as an add-on therapy to levodopa/carbidopa for idiopathic Parkinson's disease — meaning Parkinson's that arises on its own, not from another cause. It is intended for patients who are experiencing symptom fluctuations and are not responding well to, or are not good candidates for, other add-on treatments.

Because of the serious risk of liver failure, tolcapone is reserved for patients who need additional symptom control and must be stopped within 3 weeks if it is not producing a clear benefit.
