Drug & supplement interaction

Vitamin E + Minoxidil

Minoxidil brand names: Loniten, Rogaine, Minoxidil.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Vitamin E and Minoxidil in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Vitamin E and Minoxidil

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Minoxidil and Vitamin E in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Minoxidil

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Minoxidil is filed under 4 classifications — including vasodilators, antihypertensive drugs, topical drugs. Vitamin E has documented interactions with 8 drug classes — the most serious being alkylating agents (moderate), anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs (moderate) and antitumor antibiotics (moderate) — and none of Minoxidil’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Vitamin E and Minoxidil May Share a Side Effect

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do.

“Topically, vitamin E has been associated with contact dermatitis, inflammatory reactions, and eczematous lesions. Dermatitis, often associated with moisturizers containing vitamin E, has a scattered generalized distribution, is more common on the face than the hands, and is more common in females with a history of atopic dermatitis.”

Vitamin E in Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Pregnancy Possibly Safe

When used orally and appropriately. The tolerable upper intake level (UL) during pregnancy is 800 mg for those 14-18 years of age and 1000 mg for those 19 years and older. However, maternal supplementation is not generally recommended unless dietary vitamin E falls below the RDA. No serious adverse effects were reported with oral intake of 400 IU per day starting at weeks 9-22 of pregnancy in healthy patients or those at high risk for pre-eclampsia, or with 600-900 IU daily during the last two months of pregnancy. However, some preliminary evidence suggests that taking vitamin E supplements might be harmful when taken in early pregnancy. A case-control study found that taking a vitamin E supplement during the first 8 weeks of pregnancy is associated with a 1.7-9-fold increase in odds of congenital heart defects. However, the exact amount of vitamin E consumed during pregnancy in this study is unclear. Until more is known, advise patients to avoid taking a vitamin E supplement in early pregnancy unless needed for an appropriate medical indication.

Lactation Likely Safe

When used orally in amounts that do not exceed the tolerable upper intake level (UL). The UL during lactation is 800 mg for those 14-18 years of age and 1000 mg for those 19 years and older.

Lactation Possibly Unsafe

When used orally in amounts that exceed the UL due to increased risk of adverse effects.

“American hellebore heads the concerns for anyone taking minoxidil (Loniten, Rogaine), because even small amounts of its alkaloids lower blood pressure on their own, a dangerous match with one of the most potent pressure-lowering drugs prescribed. About Vitamin E

What is Vitamin E?

Vitamin E
  • General antioxidant support
  • Skin and hair care
  • Heart health
  • Eye health (age-related conditions)
  • Immune support

Vitamin E is an essential fat-soluble vitamin and antioxidant that most people get in adequate amounts from a normal diet. Supplements can help correct a true deficiency, but high-dose vitamin E has not been clearly proven to prevent heart disease or cancer and may carry risks. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking high doses.

Vitamin E is a nutrient, not a plant part; it is found in plant oils, nuts, seeds, and leafy greens · Softgels, capsules, oral liquid, chewable tablets, topical oils and creams

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Vitamin E is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Vitamin E record says about it on its own.

Vitamin E: dosing

Vitamin E needs are usually met through a normal diet. There is a recommended daily intake set by health authorities, and there is also an upper limit for supplements that should not be exceeded without medical guidance, because higher amounts raise the risk of side effects.Because the right amount depends on your age, health, and diet, it is best to follow the product label and avoid high-dose products unless a healthcare provider recommends them.

About Minoxidil

What Is Minoxidil Used For?

Brand names: Loniten, Rogaine, Minoxidil

Minoxidil tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) — specifically in patients who haven't responded well to other blood pressure medications. They are a powerful option reserved for difficult-to-control cases.

Topical minoxidil products — including solutions, sprays, gels, and foams from many brands — are used to regrow hair on the top of the scalp (called the vertex). Products labeled for men and for women may differ; for example, Bosley MD Regular Strength for Women and Dizop Minoxidil Topical Gel are each labeled for their specific intended users.
