Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Buspirone
Buspirone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group White Pepper interacts with.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include some calcium channel blockers (diltiazem, nicardipine, verapamil), chemotherapeutic agents (etoposide, paclitaxel, vinblastine, vincristine, vindesine), antifungals (ketoconazole, itraconazole), glucocorticoids, cisapride (Propulsid), alfentanil (Alfenta), fentanyl (Sublimaze), losartan (Cozaar), fluoxetine (Prozac), midazolam (Versed), omeprazole (Prilosec), ondansetron (Zofran), propranolol (Inderal), fexofenadine (Allegra), and numerous others.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for buspirone. Your body relies heavily on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break it down, and lab studies suggest piperine (the spicy compound in white pepper) can mildly slow that enzyme. If it did, more buspirone could linger in your system, which might bump up its usual effects like drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, or a foggy feeling.
The good news: this is a theoretical concern based on test-tube research, not real patients. The pinch of white pepper on your dinner is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated piperine supplements are a different story and worth mentioning to your pharmacist or doctor, especially if you notice extra grogginess.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Buspirone page
“I counsel genuine caution when supplements meet buspirone (BuSpar), the anxiety medication, because four of its 155 documented interactions are rated major. The bulk of the list, 121 ingredients, changes how your liver clears buspirone through the CYP3A4 enzyme, pushing its level up toward dizziness and drowsiness or down until the anx…”

About White Pepper
What is White Pepper?
- Digestive upset
- Seasoning and appetite support
- Cough and cold remedies (traditional)
- Minor aches and pains (traditional)
- Antimicrobial (traditional)
White pepper comes from the same plant as black pepper and is mostly used as a kitchen spice. In normal food amounts it is generally safe for most people, but there is little solid human research supporting its use as a medicine. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a health condition.
About Buspirone
What Is Buspirone Used For?
Brand name: BuSpar
Buspirone tablets and capsules are used to manage anxiety disorders or to relieve anxiety symptoms in the short term. Its effectiveness has been shown in clinical trials focused on Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) — a condition marked by persistent, hard-to-control worry along with physical symptoms like muscle tension, restlessness, difficulty concentrating, and sleep problems.
Buspirone has also been shown to relieve anxiety in people who have mild depressive symptoms alongside their anxiety. Everyday stress and tension, on their own, generally do not require treatment with a medicine like buspirone.
