Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing about Avacopan (Tavneos): it can be tough on your liver. In studies, some people taking it saw their liver enzymes climb, which is a sign the liver is under stress. Drinking wine adds a second strain on the same organ, since your liver also has to process the alcohol. Putting the two together can raise your odds of liver irritation or, less often, real liver damage.

Watch for warning signs like yellowing of your skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain on your right side, nausea, or feeling unusually tired. This matters most with regular or heavy drinking; an occasional small glass is a lower concern. Please talk with your doctor or pharmacist about what's safe for you, since they're already keeping an eye on your liver labs.

About Wine

What is Wine?

  • Social and relaxation use
  • Heart health (popular belief)
  • Antioxidant intake
  • Aiding digestion (traditional use)
  • Culinary flavoring

Wine is an alcoholic beverage made from fermented grapes and is not a true dietary supplement or medicine. Despite popular claims about heart benefits, the alcohol it contains carries real health risks, and no amount of drinking can be recommended to improve health. If you drink, do so in moderation, and avoid alcohol entirely during pregnancy or if you have certain medical conditions.

About Avacopan

What Is Avacopan Used For?

Brand name: Tavneos

Tavneos (avacopan) is used to treat severe active ANCA-associated vasculitis in adults — specifically the forms known as granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) and microscopic polyangiitis (MPA). These are serious autoimmune conditions in which the immune system attacks small blood vessels, causing damage to the kidneys, lungs, and other organs.

Tavneos is used as an add-on treatment alongside standard therapies, including glucocorticoids (steroid medicines). It is not a replacement for steroids — it works together with them.
