Here's some good news that should put your mind at ease: this interaction really doesn't apply to bleomycin. The concern on file is about xanthan gum's fiber gel slowing down how fast a pill gets absorbed from your stomach and intestines. Bleomycin isn't a pill. It's given as an injection (into a vein, muscle, or the chest space around the lungs) by your cancer team, so it skips the gut entirely.

Because nothing about bleomycin depends on stomach absorption, a fiber like xanthan gum has no realistic way to change how much medicine reaches your body. This is a theoretical, food-thickener concern only. Still, it's always smart to mention any supplement you use to your oncology pharmacist or doctor.

About Bleomycin

What Is Bleomycin Used For?

Brand name: Blenoxane

Bleomycin injection is used as a palliative (disease-managing, not curative) treatment for several cancers. It can be used alone or combined with other chemotherapy drugs to treat squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (including the mouth, tongue, tonsil, larynx, and other sites), as well as squamous cell carcinomas of the penis, cervix, and vulva. It also treats Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and testicular carcinoma (including embryonal cell, choriocarcinoma, and teratocarcinoma subtypes).

When given as an intrapleural injection (directly into the chest cavity), Bleomycin acts as a sclerosing agent — it seals off the space around the lungs to treat malignant pleural effusion and help prevent fluid from coming back.
