Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version with imipramine and xanthan gum. Xanthan gum is a soluble fiber that turns into a thick gel in your stomach. That gel can slow how fast things move through your gut, and in theory it could slow or slightly blunt how much of your imipramine dose gets absorbed. The concern here is mostly about timing, not about your body breaking the drug down differently.

I want to be honest: this is a theoretical interaction based on how fiber behaves, not something proven to cause problems. It's rated minor. Tiny food amounts of xanthan gum almost certainly won't matter. If you use larger thickener doses, a simple fix is to take your imipramine first and wait about 30 to 60 minutes before the xanthan gum. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

What Is Imipramine Used For?

Brand names: Tofranil, Tofranil PM

Imipramine is used to relieve symptoms of depression. Both Imipramine Hydrochloride tablets and Imipramine Pamoate capsules are approved for this use. Endogenous depression — the kind that seems to arise from within rather than a clear outside cause — tends to respond especially well. It may take one to three weeks before you notice the full benefit.

Imipramine Hydrochloride tablets are also approved as a short-term, add-on treatment to help reduce nighttime bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis) in children aged 6 and older, after a doctor has ruled out physical causes.
