Phenytoin falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Xanthan Gum interacts with.

Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with phenytoin (Dilantin): xanthan gum is a soluble fiber that turns into a gel in your stomach and gut. That gel can slow how fast things move through, and in theory it might hold up how much phenytoin your body soaks in. This is a theoretical concern based only on how fiber behaves, not on strong studies, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

Still, phenytoin is one of those drugs where the dose has to land in a fairly tight window. Too little and you risk breakthrough seizures; too much and you can feel dizzy, unsteady, or slurred. A simple fix is to take your phenytoin first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before any xanthan gum thickener or supplement. If you use thickened liquids daily, please run your routine by your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Phenytoin

What Is Phenytoin Used For?

Brand names: Dilantin Kapseals, Dilantin, Di-Phen, Dilantin Infatabs, Phenytek, Dilantin injection

Phenytoin is used to treat and prevent seizures. The specific types covered depend on the formulation. Oral extended-release capsules (including Phenytek), chewable tablets (including Dilantin Infatabs and Phenytoin Infatabs), and oral suspension (including Dilantin-125) are used for tonic-clonic (grand mal) and psychomotor (temporal lobe) seizures; most oral forms also cover prevention and treatment of seizures occurring during or after neurosurgery. Chewable tablets and some capsule formulations also cover complex partial seizures.

Parenteral (injectable) phenytoin sodium is used for generalized tonic-clonic status epilepticus (a prolonged, life-threatening seizure emergency) and for prevention and treatment of seizures during neurosurgery. The IV form can also substitute short-term for oral phenytoin when a patient cannot take it by mouth.
