General Statements |
- Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALC) is a naturally occurring substance that is necessary for the utilization of fats for energy. ALC's primary function is the chaperone fatty acid molecules into the mitochondria so that they can be converted into ATP, the form of chemical energy used by cells. In addition to fatty acid metabolism, ALC is critical for the maintenance of membrane structures, indirectly participating in the efficiency of signaling mechanisms. Another function of ALC is to assist in the production of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which plays an important role in learning and memory. Numerous scientific studies have found that ALC is especially important for the healthy function of brain and neuronal tissues, by providing protection for these structures, as well as through its ability to support optimal neurotransmitter activity.

- Acetyl L-Carnitine plays several important roles in the human body. Its main function is to carry fatty acids into mitochondria. Mitochondria are often referred to as the “cellular power plants” because they convert food molecules into energy. Without Acetyl L-Carnitine, fatty acids cannot enter into mitochondria. Therefore, the acetyl group of Acetyl L-Carnitine is important in the generation of energy from fats and facilitates this process.
Acetyl L-Carnitine supplementation has been demonstrated to be a neuroprotective agent, especially for memory function in aging and for the support of blood flow into the brain. In addition, because the heart uses fat as its primary energy source, Acetyl L-Carnitine may have cardio-protective qualities that beneficially affect heart functions.
Lastly, because oxidative mitochondrial decay is often a major contributor to aging, the supplementation of Acetyl L-Carnitine may also offer anti-aging benefits.
