Acidophilus Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Vitabase
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Acidophilus against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Acidophilus by Vitabase
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Vitabase Acidophilus contains 2 active ingredients: L. acidophilus La-14 and L. bulgaricus Lb-64, both live bacterial strains intended to support digestive and gut health. The rest of the capsule is made up of inactive ingredients—the capsule shell itself, rice flour, microcrystalline cellulose (a binder), silica, and magnesium stearate—that help form and preserve the tablet.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for L. acidophilus is strongest for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis, where it's rated Possibly Effective. For L. bulgaricus, the data are much thinner: we don't have enough reliable evidence to rate it for the conditions studied (acne, allergies, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, asthma, fatty liver disease, and common cold).
If you're considering this product for a specific condition, talk with your pharmacist about whether the evidence matches what you're hoping to address.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L. acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. L. bulgaricus is also generally well tolerated in healthy people, though those who are very ill or have weakened immune systems should be cautious.
Both are live microorganisms, so there's a small concern they could, in rare cases, cause infection in vulnerable patients. Gastrointestinal side effects like mild bloating, gas, or stomach discomfort are uncommon but possible when taking probiotics.
The data on this product in pregnancy is limited; the facts note that probiotics in food are likely fine, but supplement safety in pregnancy hasn't been well studied, so check with your doctor before use if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Antibiotic drugs are the only medication type documented to interact with these ingredients (Moderate severity). Antibiotics can kill the live bacteria in the supplement, making it less effective, so separate doses by a few hours.
Check your specific medications using the tool on this page.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This supplement may help with IBS, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, or other digestive concerns if you're generally healthy. If you take antibiotics, space them a few hours apart from this product so the antibiotics don't kill the live organisms.
Anyone who's very ill or immunocompromised should talk with their healthcare provider first. Check your exact medications before you start.

Acidophilus by Vitabase Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Vitabase Acidophilus contains two live probiotic bacteria, and both interact with antibiotic drugs.
The most serious interaction is Moderate in severity: taking either L. acidophilus or L. bulgaricus simultaneously with antibiotics might kill a significant number of the live organisms in the supplement, decreasing its effectiveness. The supplement's organisms are living microbes, so antibiotics will affect them just as they affect target bacteria in your body.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Although both ingredients carry this same Moderate antibiotic interaction, no other drug types are documented in the data we hold. Altogether, these interactions span 182 individual medications.
If you take any antibiotic, separate it from this supplement by a few hours—your pharmacist or doctor can advise on the best timing for your specific situation. Use the medication checker on this page to confirm your exact drugs before starting.
