What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: Lactobacillus acidophilus La-14, a live beneficial bacterium. The tablet also includes several inactive ingredients — vegetable cellulose, stearic acid, silica, and vegetable magnesium stearate — which are fillers and binders to hold the tablet together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for L. acidophilus is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.
For atopic disease (conditions like eczema and allergies), it's rated possibly ineffective. As for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), there isn't enough reliable evidence to rate it one way or the other.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. That said, the fact that it contains live microorganisms means there's a theoretical risk — in rare cases, the bacteria have been isolated in serious infections like sepsis, endocarditis, and other severe conditions.
Most of these cases appear to have involved bacteria moving from where they normally live in the body to other sites, and they're uncommon. When combined with other probiotics, some people report mild gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, gas, abdominal discomfort, or diarrhea, but these are uncommon.
One clinical trial noted a couple of cases of rash and itching, though it's unclear whether L. acidophilus was the cause. For pregnancy, the available data suggest L. acidophilus is possibly safe, though information is limited.
For lactation, there isn't enough data on file to say either way — talk to your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you during breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start this product, double-check your antibiotic medications with the search tool on this page. Antibiotics taken at the same time might reduce how well the probiotic works, so spacing them out is key.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This probiotic may help with IBS, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and a few other gastrointestinal or vaginal concerns, though the evidence is modest. If you're taking antibiotics, separate them from this product by several hours.
Check with your doctor before starting, especially if you have a weakened immune system or are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
