Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-14, a naturally occurring bacterium that lives in the human gut and is used as a probiotic supplement. The capsule also holds inactive ingredients—microcrystalline cellulose, hypromellose, stearic acid, and silicon dioxide—which are fillers and binders that hold the capsule together.

By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: healthy intestinal flora and probiotic balance.
  • We looked for evidence on: Antibiotic-associated diarrhea, Bacterial vaginosis, Clostridioides difficile infection, Constipation, Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) — and 4 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Possibly Effective" for Antibiotic-associated diarrhea (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Possibly Effective" for Bacterial vaginosis, Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
  • Also on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Constipation, Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Radiation-induced diarrhea, Lactose intolerance.

For atopic disease (allergic and eczema-type conditions), it's rated possibly ineffective. For acute respiratory distress syndrome, there isn't enough reliable evidence yet to say whether it works.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. That said, the data are limited, so it's worth checking with your doctor before you start.

Since this product contains live microorganisms, there is a theoretical risk of infection in some patients—most reports involve people whose immune systems were already compromised or who had other serious medical conditions. Gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, gas, abdominal discomfort, or diarrhea are possible but uncommon when taken alone.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

If you have IBS, antibiotic-related diarrhea, or bacterial vaginosis, this probiotic may be worth trying. If you're on antibiotics, time your doses apart so the medication doesn't kill off the live bacteria in the supplement.

Check with your doctor before starting, especially if you have a weak immune system or serious underlying illness.

Antibiotic Drugs

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.

Acidophilus Two Billion by NOW: Common Questions

Does Acidophilus Two Billion by NOW interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Acidophilus Two Billion has a known interaction with 182 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Acidophilus Two Billion contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take Acidophilus Two Billion while I'm on an antibiotic?
