Anxiety & Stress Relief Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Anxiety & Stress Relief against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Anxiety & Stress Relief by Nature's Bounty
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains two active ingredients: L-theanine and ashwagandha extract. L-theanine is an amino acid that research suggests may help with cognitive function.
Ashwagandha is an herbal extract traditionally used to support relaxation and stress management. The tablet also contains several inactive ingredients — vegetable cellulose, crospovidone, silica, stearic acid, vegetable magnesium stearate, and vegetable glycerin — which serve as fillers and binders to hold the tablet together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Ashwagandha has the stronger evidence here. It's rated possibly effective for insomnia, anxiety, stress, and generalized anxiety disorder — the conditions this product targets.
L-theanine is rated possibly effective specifically for cognitive function, but the evidence for it on anxiety or stress isn't established in the data we hold. For ashwagandha on bipolar disorder, the evidence is insufficient to rate.
For L-theanine on age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, and generalized anxiety disorder, we don't have enough reliable evidence to say whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Both ingredients are generally well tolerated in the short term for healthy adults, but long-term safety data are limited. L-theanine may cause headaches, drowsiness, or increased dreaming.
Ashwagandha can cause digestive upset — diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting — though these don't occur often at typical doses. Rare serious side effects have been reported with ashwagandha, including liver damage and changes to thyroid function.
Pregnancy is where real caution enters: L-theanine doesn't have enough safety data in pregnancy, and ashwagandha is rated likely unsafe — traditionally associated with miscarriage risk. Neither ingredient has enough safety information for breastfeeding; talk with your pharmacist or doctor about either situation.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this, double-check if you're on benzodiazepines (like Valium or Klonopin), other CNS depressants, blood pressure medications, antidiabetes drugs, thyroid hormone, immunosuppressants, or medications that stress your liver — all are Moderate-severity concerns. If you take serotonergic drugs (like certain antidepressants) or CYP1A2 substrates (certain medications your liver processes), there's a Minor risk as well.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you take blood pressure medications, diabetes drugs, thyroid hormones, benzodiazepines, or any sedating drug, this product isn't one to start without checking first. Ashwagandha's interactions are more extensive than L-theanine's.
If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, this isn't the right choice. Run your medications through the checker on this page before you buy.

Anxiety & Stress Relief by Nature's Bounty Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Nature's Bounty Anxiety & Stress Relief contains two ingredients, L-theanine and ashwagandha extract, both of which have documented interactions with medications.
Altogether, these interactions span 1,351 individual medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Ashwagandha is the bigger concern here. It may increase the sedative effects of CNS depressants (drugs that slow your brain and nervous system — like sedatives, benzodiazepines, and barbiturates) — that's a Moderate-severity risk.
It can also potentiate antihypertensive drugs (blood pressure medications), raising the risk of dangerously low blood pressure. It may worsen the effects of thyroid hormone replacements and theoretically reduce the effectiveness of immunosuppressants (drugs that dampen immune function).
Ashwagandha might also lower blood sugar and increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) if you take antidiabetes drugs. Additionally, ashwagandha has been linked to liver damage in rare cases, so combining it with hepatotoxic drugs (medications that can injure the liver) poses a theoretical risk.
L-theanine carries Moderate-severity risk with antihypertensive drugs — it may lower blood pressure and amplify their effect. It also has Minor interactions with CNS depressants and serotonergic drugs (medications that affect serotonin), though these are less established.

Ashwagandha extract
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking ashwagandha with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
There is preliminary clinical evidence suggesting that ashwagandha might lower blood glucose levels. Theoretically, ashwagandha might have additive effects when used with antidiabetes drugs and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking ashwagandha with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Animal research suggests that ashwagandha might lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Theoretically, ashwagandha might have additive effects when used with antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypotension.
Benzodiazepines
Theoretically, taking ashwagandha might increase the sedative effects of benzodiazepines.
There is preliminary evidence that ashwagandha might have an additive effect with diazepam (Valium) and clonazepam (Klonopin). This may also occur with other benzodiazepines.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, taking ashwagandha might increase the sedative effects of CNS depressants.
Ashwagandha seems to have sedative effects. Theoretically, this may potentiate the effects of barbiturates, other sedatives, and anxiolytics.
Hepatotoxic Drugs
Theoretically, taking ashwagandha with hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of liver damage.
Ashwagandha has been linked to cases of acute hepatitis, liver failure, hepatic encephalopathy, autoimmune hepatitis, the need for liver transplantation, and death due to liver failure.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, taking ashwagandha might decrease the effects of immunosuppressants.
Ashwagandha has demonstrated immunostimulant effects in humans. Animal research has shown that ashwagandha can attenuate the immunosuppression caused by cyclophosphamide.
Thyroid Hormone
Ashwagandha might increase the effects and adverse effects of thyroid hormone.
Concomitant use of ashwagandha with thyroid hormones may cause additive therapeutic and adverse effects. Preliminary clinical research and animal studies suggest that ashwagandha boosts thyroid hormone synthesis and secretion. In one clinical study, ashwagandha increased triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) levels by 41.5% and 19.6%, respectively, and reduced serum TSH levels by 17.4% from baseline in adults with subclinical hypothyroidism.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates

Serotonergic Drugs
Some animal studies have reported that ashwagandha can enhance serotonergic transmission by altering certain serotonin (5-HT) receptors. However, there is no evidence to suggest that ashwagandha increases the risk of serotonin-related effects, and there have been no published case reports of serotonin syndrome when combined with other serotonergic drugs. Nevertheless, due to the lack of extensive studies on the matter and the fact that ashwagandha appears to affect serotonergic pathways, it would be prudent to exercise caution when combining it with drugs that affect serotonin. L-Theanine
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.
Serotonergic Drugs
Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.
