HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Asafoetida by Hawaii Pharm
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This is a single-ingredient product: certified organic Asafoetida extract in liquid form. Asafoetida comes from the resin of a plant root and has been used traditionally in herbal medicine.
The liquid is suspended in vegetable glycerin, pharmaceutical-grade alcohol, and purified water.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The data we hold shows insufficient evidence to rate asafoetida for irritable bowel syndrome, polycystic ovary syndrome, or COVID-19. That doesn't mean it doesn't work for these conditions — it means there isn't enough reliable research yet to say one way or the other.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Asafoetida appears generally well tolerated at food-level amounts, but medicinal doses haven't been well studied. Large amounts have been reported to cause swelling of the lips, belching, gas, diarrhea, headache, or convulsions; doses as low as 50–100 mg have caused headache or convulsions in some reports.
There are also reports of infantile methemoglobinemia (a condition affecting blood oxygen) tied to asafoetida, and topical use has been linked to genital swelling. The safety data advises against this supplement during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist before use if either applies to you.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on blood pressure medications (captopril, enalapril, losartan, valsartan, diltiazem, and others) or blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (aspirin, clopidogrel, warfarin, ibuprofen, naproxen, enoxaparin, and others). Altogether, these interactions span 289 individual medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Asafoetida is a traditional herbal extract with two documented interactions you need to know about before you take it — especially if you're on blood pressure or blood thinner medications. The evidence for what it actually does isn't established yet in our data.
