HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Asafoetida by Hawaii Pharm
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: certified organic asafoetida extract, a resin from the fennel family plant traditionally used in herbal medicine. The extract is suspended in vegetable palm glycerin, pharmaceutical-grade alcohol, and purified water.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
We don't have effectiveness ratings on file for asafoetida in our data. That doesn't mean it doesn't work — it means the strength of evidence for specific uses hasn't been graded in our system.
If you're considering this for a particular health goal, ask your pharmacist or doctor what the evidence shows for that use.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
In food amounts, asafoetida is generally well tolerated. At medicinal doses, safety data is limited.
Large amounts can cause swelling of the lips, belching, gas, diarrhea, headache, or convulsions. Doses of 50–100 mg have been reported to cause headache or convulsions.
There are rare reports of a serious blood-oxygen condition (methemoglobinemia) in infants exposed to asafoetida, so it should not be given to babies. During pregnancy, the safety evidence advises against medicinal amounts — stick to food amounts only.
While breastfeeding, there isn't enough safety information, so skip supplement doses and talk with your doctor or pharmacist about your individual situation.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this product, double-check with your pharmacist if you're on blood pressure medication (like captopril, enalapril, losartan, valsartan, or diltiazem) or blood thinners and pain relievers (like aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, or prescription anticoagulants). Both carry Moderate interaction risk.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Asafoetida may be worth considering if you're exploring traditional herbal options and have cleared it with your doctor — but only if you're not taking blood pressure medication or blood thinners, and only in food amounts during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Check your medications with the tool on this page, and talk with your pharmacist before you start.

Asafoetida by Hawaii Pharm Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Hawaii Pharm Asafoetida Liquid has documented interactions with two major medication types.
The primary concern is blood pressure drugs (antihypertensives), where asafoetida's own blood-pressure-lowering effects could add to your medication's effect — this is rated Moderate severity. Examples include captopril, enalapril, losartan, valsartan, and diltiazem.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Second, there's a Moderate-severity risk with blood thinners and anti-inflammatory pain relievers (anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs). Asafoetida may theoretically increase bleeding risk when combined with these, which include aspirin, clopidogrel, ibuprofen, naproxen, dalteparin, and enoxaparin.
Altogether, these interactions span 287 individual medications. Before you start this supplement, check your exact prescriptions and over-the-counter pain relievers in the tool below — especially if you're on blood pressure medication or anything that thins your blood.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, asafoetida might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs. Some anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), diclofenac (Voltaren, Cataflam, others), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others), naproxen (Anaprox, Naprosyn, others), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, warfarin (Coumadin), and others.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Evidence from animal research suggests that asafoetida has hypotensive effects. Theoretically, concomitant use may increase therapeutic effects of antihypertensive therapy due to hypotensive activity of asafoetida. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.
