The softgel itself is made from gelatin, glycerol, purified water, soybean oil, and tocopherol (a form of vitamin E).

Not established
The evidence for astaxanthin's ability to treat age-related cognitive decline, macular degeneration, aging skin, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, or carpal tunnel syndrome is not established in the data we hold. That doesn't mean it doesn't work — it means we don't yet have reliable evidence to rate it one way or another.

How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Astaxanthin appears to be well tolerated overall in the studies we have, though long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stools — a harmless color change from the astaxanthin itself.
A small number of trial participants at lower doses experienced increased bowel movements and red stools; at higher doses (40 mg daily), a couple of patients reported severe stomach pain. The safety data aren't robust enough to recommend astaxanthin during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, so it's best to avoid it in those situations.

Cytochrome P450 2B6 (Cyp2B6) Substrates
Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2B6.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces cytochrome CYP2B6 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
