What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: astragalus root powder, 550 mg per capsule. Astragalus has been used in traditional medicine and is being studied for a range of conditions, though evidence for most uses is not yet reliable.
The capsule itself is made from vegetable sources, and the inactive ingredients include vegetable magnesium stearate.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold on astragalus doesn't yet support its use for any single condition we've reviewed—allergic rhinitis (hay fever), amenorrhea, aplastic anemia, angina, asthma, and beta-thalassemia all show insufficient reliable evidence to rate its effectiveness. That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means larger or better-designed studies are needed before we can say.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Astragalus is generally well tolerated over the short term in healthy adults, though good safety data in humans is limited. It is not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding due to insufficient safety data—the facts advise against use in both situations.
Reported side effects are uncommon but include dizziness and, less often, rash or skin irritation, particularly with intravenous dosing. In one trial, oral astragalus was linked to throat pain, though it's unclear whether astragalus caused it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take immunosuppressants (after transplant or for autoimmune disease), lithium, cyclophosphamide (chemotherapy), or antidiabetes drugs—astragalus has Moderate interactions with all of them. The interaction with blood sugar drugs carries the highest practical risk in everyday life, since combined use could lower your blood sugar too far.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Astragalus may be worth considering if you're interested in immune support and have no major health conditions or medications. However, if you take immunosuppressants, lithium, chemotherapy, or blood sugar medications, you'll need to clear this with your doctor or pharmacist first.
Because the long-term safety data is thin and effectiveness for most uses isn't well established, have that conversation before you start.

Astragalus 550 mg by Nutricost Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Astragalus 550 mg by Nutricost has documented interactions with several medication types.
The most serious concern is with immunosuppressants (drugs that dampen the immune system after organ transplants or for autoimmune conditions). Astragalus appears to stimulate immune function, which could theoretically reduce how well these drugs work.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Lithium, a mood stabilizer, also presents a Moderate-severity interaction. Astragalus has diuretic properties that may reduce how your body clears lithium, potentially raising its levels and side effects.
Similarly, the chemotherapy drug cyclophosphamide carries a Moderate-severity interaction, though the research on astragalus's effect here is mixed—some studies suggest it might reverse the drug's intended immunosuppression, while others show no effect.
If you take antidiabetes drugs (insulin or oral medications for blood sugar control), a Moderate interaction exists: astragalus may lower blood sugar on its own, and combined with these drugs it could increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Altogether, these interactions span 208 individual medications.
