What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: astragalus root at 200 mg per capsule. Astragalus is a traditional herb used in some practices for immune and general wellness support, though the evidence for most of its uses remains incomplete.
The capsule itself includes inactive ingredients—gelatin, cellulose, magnesium stearate, and astragalus (likely as a filler form)—that help deliver the active dose.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The data we hold shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate astragalus for most of the conditions it's marketed for—allergic rhinitis (hay fever), irregular periods (amenorrhea), aplastic anemia, angina, asthma, and beta-thalassemia among them. That means human studies either don't exist or aren't strong enough yet to say whether it works.
If you're considering this for a specific health concern, talk it over with your doctor so you can weigh what limited evidence exists against other options.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Astragalus is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth short-term in healthy adults, but quality human safety data is limited. Some trial participants have reported dizziness and, in one case, angina-like chest symptoms, though it's unclear whether the herb caused them.
The main caution: if you take it by vein (intravenously), it may cause temporary dizziness, palpitations, rash, or itching—but this product is taken orally, so that's less of a concern here. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, there isn't enough reliable safety data, so it's best to avoid it.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice if you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start Astragalus Root 200 mg, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take lithium (Moderate), immunosuppressants, diabetes medications, or cyclophosphamide (all Moderate). These are the medication types with documented interactions in our data.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Astragalus Root by Thompson is generally well tolerated orally in the short term, but it's not right for everyone. If you take lithium, immunosuppressants, diabetes drugs, or cyclophosphamide, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting—the interactions are real, even if they're still theoretical.
For most other people, the main question is whether it actually works for what you want it for, and on that the data is thin.

Astragalus Root 200 mg by Thompson Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Astragalus Root 200 mg by Thompson does interact with several medications, and the strongest concerns are around blood sugar control and mood-stabilizing drugs.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The most serious interaction is with lithium, a medication used to treat bipolar disorder. Astragalus appears to have diuretic (water-shedding) properties, which could reduce how much lithium your body clears.
That might raise lithium levels and increase the risk of side effects—a Moderate concern you'll want to flag with your doctor before starting this supplement.
You'll also want to check if you take immunosuppressants (drugs that intentionally calm down your immune system, often used after transplants or for certain autoimmune conditions), cyclophosphamide (a chemotherapy drug), or diabetes medications. Astragalus seems to stimulate immune function and may lower blood sugar, meaning it could potentially reduce how well those drugs work or push your blood sugar too low—all Moderate-level concerns.
Altogether, these interactions span 208 individual medications.
Use the medication checker on this page to look up your exact prescriptions before you start.
