HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Astragalus Root 500 mg by Christopher's Original Formulas
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: organic astragalus root at 500 mg per capsule. Astragalus is an herb used in traditional Chinese medicine, and people take it for various reasons — though the evidence for most of those uses isn't established yet according to our data.
The capsule itself is plant-derived.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold doesn't establish that astragalus is effective for any of the conditions it's used for — including hay fever, irregular periods (amenorrhea), aplastic anemia, angina, asthma, or beta-thalassemia. All of those show insufficient reliable evidence to rate.
That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means the science isn't there yet to say one way or the other.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Astragalus is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth short-term in healthy adults, but good human safety data is limited. The adverse effects reported in studies are scattered — one trial reported lacunar angina (a type of chest pain), and a small number of people have reported dizziness or rash, though these effects may not have been caused by astragalus itself.
Intravenous forms have been tied to palpitations and dizziness, but you're taking it by mouth, so that's less relevant. The safety data advises against astragalus during pregnancy and while breastfeeding because there isn't enough reliable information to know either way.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on immunosuppressants (for transplants or autoimmune disease), lithium (for bipolar disorder), antidiabetes drugs, or cyclophosphamide (chemotherapy). All four are documented at Moderate severity.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you take immunosuppressants, lithium, diabetes medication, or cyclophosphamide, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting astragalus — the interactions are theoretical but documented at moderate concern. If you're pregnant or nursing, skip it until you've talked it over with your healthcare provider.
For anyone else without those concerns, the main caveat is that good safety data in humans is limited.

Astragalus Root 500 mg by Christopher's Original Formulas Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Astragalus Root 500 mg by Christopher's Original Formulas does interact with several medication types, and the interactions are documented at Moderate severity across the board.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The biggest concern is immunosuppressants (drugs that intentionally weaken your immune system after a transplant or for certain autoimmune conditions). Astragalus seems to boost immune function, which could theoretically work against what those medications are trying to do.
Lithium, used for bipolar disorder, is another one to watch — astragalus may have diuretic properties that could reduce how your body clears lithium, potentially raising levels to unsafe amounts.
Additionally, astragalus might interfere with cyclophosphamide (a chemotherapy drug), though the research is mixed on whether it actually does. If you take diabetes medications, astragalus could theoretically increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), especially if you're already on drugs designed to lower your glucose.
We don't hold interaction data for every medication out there, so run your exact prescriptions through the checker on this page. Altogether, these interactions span 208 individual medications.
