Berberine is generally well tolerated in the short term but commonly causes digestive upset — abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, gas, nausea, and vomiting. It may also cause dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, or headache.

Ceylon cinnamon at food amounts is generally safe; however, the large doses in supplements over a long period raise concern because cinnamon contains coumarin, which can damage the liver at very high intakes. A small number of people have reported rashes or contact dermatitis from cinnamon.
