Abrocitinib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Berberine interacts with.

Theoretically, berberine might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
Preliminary clinical research shows that berberine can inhibit CYP2C9. Theoretically, taking berberine with drugs metabolized by CYP2C9 might increase drug levels and increase the risk of adverse effects.

Here's the short version for Cibinqo (abrocitinib): your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2C9 as one of the pathways to clear this medicine out of your body. Berberine appears to slow that enzyme down a bit. If it's working, your abrocitinib could clear more slowly and build up a little higher than expected, which may nudge up the chance of side effects like nausea, headache, acne, or a higher risk of infections.

I want to be honest that this is mostly theoretical and based on early, lower-quality research, so it's a possible concern rather than a sure thing. Food amounts aren't really the issue here; concentrated berberine supplements are. Please don't start or stop anything on your own. Just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first so they can keep an eye on you.

Theoretically, berberine might increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro and in vivo research suggest that berberine can inhibit platelet aggregation. Theoretically, berberine might have additive effects when used with anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs and increase the risk of bleeding.

Here's the thing to know about pairing berberine with abrocitinib (Cibinqo). This concern is really about bleeding, not about how your eczema medicine gets broken down. Lab and animal studies hint that berberine may make platelets a little less sticky, which could add to bleeding risk when combined with blood thinners.

What's worth mentioning is that abrocitinib itself can already lower your platelet count, especially in the first weeks. So both could nudge bleeding risk in the same direction (think easy bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding gums). This is theoretical and based on weak evidence, so don't panic, but do run it by your pharmacist or doctor before starting berberine, since your platelets may already be monitored on this drug.

What Is Abrocitinib Used For?

Brand name: Cibinqo

Cibinqo (abrocitinib) is used to treat moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (eczema) in adults and children 12 years of age and older. It is specifically for people whose eczema has not been adequately controlled with other systemic (whole-body) treatments, including biologics, or when those treatments are not a safe option.

Cibinqo is not recommended to be used at the same time as other JAK inhibitors, biologic immunomodulators, or other immunosuppressants (medicines that reduce immune system activity).
