Berberine + Oxycodone
Oxycodone brand names: OxyContin, Roxicodone, OxyIR, Percolone, Oxecta, and others.
Oxycodone falls into 2 drug categories that Berberine can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, berberine might increase the sedative effects of CNS depressants.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Berberine interacts with whole categories of medication. Oxycodone falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Berberine in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CNS DEPRESSANTS
1 of 2Why this applies to Oxycodone
Oxycodone falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Berberine interacts with.
Animal research suggests that berberine may have sedative effects. Theoretically, use of berberine along with CNS depressants might produce additive therapeutic and adverse effects.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with berberine and oxycodone: oxycodone is a strong opioid pain reliever that already slows down your brain and nervous system, causing drowsiness, slowed breathing, and a foggy feeling. Berberine has shown some calming, sedative-like effects in animal studies, so the concern is that stacking the two together could add up and leave you more sedated than expected.
I want to be honest about the strength of this one. It's theoretical and based only on lab and animal research, not solid human studies, so it may not amount to much for most people. Still, oxycodone is nothing to gamble with. If you notice extra sleepiness, dizziness, or slowed breathing, that's worth taking seriously. Please run this combination by your pharmacist or doctor before starting berberine.

CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Oxycodone also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence show that berberine can inhibit CYP2D6. Theoretically, use of berberine with drugs metabolized by CYP2D6 might increase drug levels and increase the risk of adverse effects.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the situation with these two. Berberine appears to slow down a liver enzyme called CYP2D6, and that same enzyme helps your body process oxycodone. When that pathway gets blocked, oxycodone can hang around in your system a little longer than usual, which may bump up its effects.
In real terms, that could mean more drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, nausea, or slowed breathing. Now, the honest part: this is mostly theoretical and based on lab work plus some early, lower-quality studies, so it may not be a big deal for everyone. Oxycodone also leans on another enzyme (CYP3A4), so 2D6 isn't the whole story. Still, since opioids carry real risks, please run this by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Oxycodone page
“Oxycodone is a potent opioid painkiller, and anything that deepens its sedation can slow breathing itself, which is why this list deserves genuine respect. Of the 145 supplement and herbal ingredients on record, eight rate major, and the biggest cluster by far, 78 ingredients, adds extra drowsiness on top of the opioid's own.”

About Berberine
What is Berberine?
- Blood sugar control
- High cholesterol
- Heart and metabolic health
- Digestive upset
- Antimicrobial support
- Weight management
Berberine is a yellow plant compound that has shown promise for lowering blood sugar and cholesterol in some studies, but the quality of research varies and it is not a replacement for prescribed medicine. It can cause stomach upset and should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Always check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting it, especially if you take other medications.
About Oxycodone
What Is Oxycodone Used For?
Brand names: OxyContin, Roxicodone, OxyIR, Percolone, Oxecta, OxyNeo
Oxycodone treats pain that is severe enough to need an opioid pain medicine, when other treatments are not enough. Other options include non-opioid pain relievers or opioid combination products.
Some products are for specific situations. Extended-release products (OxyContin, Xtampza ER, and oxycodone extended-release tablets) are for severe, persistent pain that needs daily, around-the-clock treatment. They are not for as-needed use. The 100 mg per 5 mL (20 mg/mL) oral solution is only for opioid-tolerant patients. Oxaydo is labeled for acute and chronic pain.
