Here's the gist for combining berberine with aripiprazole (Abilify). Aripiprazole can already cause drowsiness or a foggy, slowed-down feeling for some people. Berberine, in animal studies, has shown mild sedative effects of its own. So the concern is simply that the two together might add up and leave you feeling sleepier or more sluggish than aripiprazole alone.

I want to be honest with you though: this is a theoretical worry based only on lab and animal research, not on solid human studies. It's not something I'd panic over. Just be aware of how you feel, especially when driving or starting berberine. And since aripiprazole is a serious medication, please run any new supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first.

Theoretically, berberine might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence show that berberine can inhibit CYP2D6. Theoretically, use of berberine with drugs metabolized by CYP2D6 might increase drug levels and increase the risk of adverse effects.

Here's the short version for these two: your body relies partly on an enzyme called CYP2D6 to clear aripiprazole out of your system. Berberine appears to slow that enzyme down, so the medicine may not break down as quickly and could build up a bit more than usual.

If aripiprazole levels climb, you might notice more of its typical effects, things like drowsiness, dizziness, restlessness or an inner sense of needing to move (akathisia), or nausea. To be clear, this is still mostly theoretical, based on lab work and limited human data, so it may not cause trouble for everyone. Still, since this is a brain medication where steady levels matter, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before adding berberine rather than changing anything on your own.
