Berry Well Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Vital Kids
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Berry Well against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Berry Well by Vital Kids
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Berry Well contains four active ingredients: arabinogalactan powder (from larch), astragalus root extract, isatis tinctoria root extract, and elderberry fruit extract. These are combined with inactive ingredients including glutamine, freeze-dried pineapple powder, xylitol, and silica to make up the powder formula.
The product is designed as a children's supplement blend, though the product facts don't specify the age range or intended daily dose.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence supporting these ingredients is limited. Arabinogalactan has insufficient reliable evidence for common cold or cholesterol (hyperlipidemia).
Astragalus likewise shows insufficient evidence for hay fever, amenorrhea, anemia, angina, asthma, and beta-thalassemia. Isatis tinctoria is rated possibly effective for psoriasis, but insufficient evidence for respiratory infections, prostate cancer, ulcerative colitis, hepatitis, and aging skin.
Elderberry is rated insufficient for hay fever, heart disease, chronic fatigue, COPD, cognitive function, and respiratory infections. In short, none of these ingredients have established effectiveness for the conditions they're commonly used for.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Arabinogalactan is generally well tolerated as a fiber, though some people experience bloating and flatulence; long-term safety data are limited. Astragalus is generally well tolerated short-term in healthy adults, but adverse effects in trials have included dizziness and—in one case—a type of chest pain called lacunar angina (though it's unclear whether astragalus caused it).
Isatis tinctoria has limited human safety data. Elderberry from ripe, cooked fruit is generally well tolerated, but raw or unripe berries, seeds, leaves, and bark contain toxins that can cause nausea, vomiting, severe diarrhea, weakness, dizziness, numbness, and in rare cases, autoimmune hepatitis (liver inflammation).
This product is made from an extract, so it should be prepared safely, but always check the label to confirm. During pregnancy, astragalus, isatis tinctoria, and elderberry are advised against due to insufficient safety data.
Astragalus and isatis tinctoria are also not recommended while breastfeeding. Elderberry is rated likely safe in pregnancy and lactation, though safety information is still limited.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before giving Berry Well to your child, check with your pharmacist or doctor if they take immunosuppressants (like cyclosporine or tacrolimus after a transplant), lithium for mood disorders, cyclophosphamide or pazopanib for cancer, or any diabetes medication. All of these carry Moderate interactions with ingredients in this product.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Berry Well is marketed to children, but the active ingredients lack strong evidence for their claimed uses and carry Moderate interactions with immunosuppressants, lithium, some cancer drugs, and diabetes medications. If your child takes any prescription medication—especially anything that affects the immune system, heart, cancer treatment, or blood sugar—talk with your child's doctor or pharmacist before adding this product.
Even without medications, the limited safety data and lack of proven benefit mean it's worth discussing with a healthcare provider first.

Berry Well by Vital Kids Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Berry Well by Vital Kids contains four active ingredients, and three of them have documented interactions with medications.
The most serious concern is with immunosuppressant drugs (used after organ transplants or for certain autoimmune conditions)—arabinogalactan, astragalus, and elderberry all theoretically interfere with how these medications work by stimulating immune function instead of suppressing it. Affected drugs include azathioprine, cyclosporine, tacrolimus, and others in this class.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Astragalus carries additional Moderate interactions: it may increase lithium levels and adverse effects through diuretic activity, and it might interfere with cyclophosphamide (a cancer drug that also suppresses immunity). Astragalus also theoretically raises the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) if combined with diabetes medications, since the herb itself may lower blood glucose.
Elderberry has a Moderate interaction documented with pazopanib, a cancer drug for soft-tissue sarcoma—one case reported severe nausea, loose stools, and liver injury when taken together. Isatis tinctoria root extract was checked with no interactions documented in our data, though that is not a guarantee none exist.
Altogether, these interactions span 208 individual medications. Run your exact medications through the checker on this page before starting Berry Well.

Theoretically, astragalus might interfere with cyclophosphamide therapy.
Evidence regarding the effect of astragalus on immunosuppression caused by cyclophosphamide is conflicting. Some animal research suggests that astragalus reverses cyclophosphamide-induced immunosuppression. However, other animal research shows no effect.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, astragalus might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.
Astragalus seems to stimulate immune function. Theoretically, taking astragalus might decrease the effects of immunosuppressive therapy.
Lithium
Theoretically, astragalus might increase levels and adverse effects of lithium.
Animal research suggests that astragalus has diuretic properties. Theoretically, due to this diuretic effect, astragalus might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium.
Arabinogalactan powder
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, larch arabinogalactan might interfere with immunosuppression therapy due to immunostimulant effects. Immunosuppressant drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), corticosteroids (glucocorticoids), and other drugs.
Elderberry fruit extract
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, elderberry might interfere with immunosuppressant therapy due to its immunostimulant activity.
Elderberry has immunostimulant activity, increasing the production of cytokines, including interleukin and tumor necrosis factor.
Pazopanib (Votrient)
Theoretically, elderberry might interact with pazopanib, potentially increasing the risk of adverse effects.
