Beta-sitosterol is likely effective for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), the gradual enlargement of the prostate that can cause urinary symptoms in older men. The evidence suggests it may be possibly effective for familial hypercholesterolemia (inherited high cholesterol) and coronary heart disease (CHD), though the data for those uses is less robust than for BPH.
