Together they make up the beta-sitosterol complex. The remaining ingredients are inactive fillers: calcium carbonate, vegetable cellulose, vegetable magnesium stearate, and silica.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence for this product's effects is mixed. Citrus pectin is possibly effective for high cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia), but evidence for prediabetes and radiation exposure is insufficient.
Beta-sitosterol is likely effective for benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate) and possibly effective for familial high cholesterol and heart disease. The evidence we hold doesn't establish effectiveness for the other plant sterols in the complex.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Beta-sitosterol and citrus pectin are generally well tolerated in the short term, though you should check with a healthcare provider before starting. The most common side effects from both are mild digestive issues — gas, diarrhea, constipation, indigestion, or nausea.
Pectin may occasionally cause loose stools or mild cramps. Rare but serious: allergic reactions including anaphylaxis can occur in people sensitive to pectin.
One case report linked beta-sitosterol to acute pancreatitis, though symptoms resolved when the person stopped taking it. For pregnancy: pectin from food is likely safe, but concentrated pectin supplements haven't been well studied in pregnancy — check with your doctor.
Beta-sitosterol should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to insufficient safety data. Breastfeeding safety for pectin supplements is also not well established.

Citrus Pectin

A small clinical study shows that taking tetracycline with bismuth subsalicylate in a kaolin-pectin suspension reduces the absorption of tetracycline by about 34%. It is unclear if these effects are due to pectin, kaolin, bismuth subsalicylate, or the combination.
