Betaine Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Betaine against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Betaine by Highland Laboratories
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This 2-ingredient product combines betaine hydrochloride, which is hydrochloric acid bonded to betaine and designed to increase stomach acid, and acid protease, a digestive enzyme. The remaining ingredients are vegetable cellulose, cellulose, silica, magnesium stearate, and chlorophyll—these are inactive ingredients that form and stabilize the capsule.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence on betaine HCl isn't established in our data. It's been studied for several conditions—dyspepsia (indigestion), hypothyroidism, diarrhea, rheumatoid arthritis, food allergies, and allergic rhinitis—but none have sufficient reliable evidence to support its use.
Acid protease effectiveness data isn't on file for this product either.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Betaine HCl may irritate your stomach and isn't safe if you have ulcers, gastritis, or true acid reflux—the acid it produces could worsen these conditions or cause heartburn. Acid protease is generally well tolerated for most adults but may occasionally cause digestive upset or allergic reactions; people with sensitivity to protease enzymes (sometimes seen in those exposed to laundry enzymes) should be cautious.
For pregnancy, the safety data advises against betaine HCl—there isn't enough information to know it's safe. Acid protease should also be avoided in pregnancy unless a doctor prescribes it.
During breastfeeding, there isn't enough data for betaine HCl, so medical advice is needed before using it; acid protease is also not recommended during breastfeeding without guidance from your doctor or pharmacist.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
Before taking this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on H2-blockers, antacids, or proton pump inhibitors—betaine HCl may reduce how well these work. No interactions are documented for acid protease in our data.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.
This product is designed to increase stomach acid, so it's only an option if you have low acid (not high). If you take any acid-reducing medication or have ulcers or reflux, skip it—and talk with your own doctor or pharmacist before starting, especially to confirm your stomach acid is actually low and that neither ingredient will cause problems with your other medications.

Betaine by Highland Laboratories Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Highland Laboratories' Betaine contains betaine hydrochloride, which interacts with medications that reduce stomach acid.
Betaine HCl works by increasing stomach acidity, so it can weaken the effects of acid-reducing drugs—a Minor concern across three drug types.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
If you take H2-blockers (like famotidine or ranitidine), antacids, or proton pump inhibitors (PPIs, such as omeprazole), betaine HCl may reduce how well these medications work by counteracting their acid-lowering effect. The product also contains acid protease (a digestive enzyme), which we could not check for interactions.
Altogether, these interactions span 36 individual medications. Before you start this product, run your exact prescriptions through the interaction checker on this page or check with your own doctor or pharmacist—especially if you're on any stomach acid medication.
