HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Biodynamic Holy Basil Extract by Oregon's Wild Harvest
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Holy basil is the only active ingredient in this product, so it is a single-ingredient liquid extract. Our data describes how it has been studied in trials and animal research, but it does not include separate dosing or chemistry details.
The inactive ingredients listed are alcohol and distilled water. They are not active ingredients.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
Holy basil has not been rated as effective for any condition in our data. Each of the six conditions we list is marked as insufficient reliable evidence to rate: age-related cognitive decline, generalized anxiety disorder, asthma, headache, respiratory tract infections, and dental plaque.
That means the evidence isn't established in the data we hold, which is different from showing the extract doesn't work.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
The safety data describes holy basil extract as generally well tolerated short-term in adults, though high-quality long-term safety data are limited. In trials, the most common side effects were loose stools and nausea, reported by a small number of participants.
A bitter taste was reported with the mouthwash form in clinical trials. For pregnancy, the safety data advises against use, because animal data raise concerns and human safety isn't established.
The data rates pregnancy and breastfeeding as possibly unsafe. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk it over with your own doctor or pharmacist before using it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Double-check with your own doctor or pharmacist before taking this if you use blood thinners (anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs), which carry a Moderate interaction severity for bleeding risk. Antidiabetes drugs and pentobarbital, a barbiturate sedative, are also rated Moderate.
These are the drug types documented for holy basil in our data.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This extract may appeal to adults who are curious about holy basil, but the evidence for any specific use isn't established in our data. Anyone taking blood thinners, diabetes medications, or barbiturate sedatives should be especially careful, as should anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding.
Talk it over with your own doctor or pharmacist before you start, especially if you take any prescription medication.
