Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains a single active ingredient: lemon balm extract in liquid form. Lemon balm is a plant traditionally used to help with stress and mood.

The extract also includes alcohol and distilled water as inactive ingredients (the liquid carrier).

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed

This product doesn't appear to be marketed for a specific use, so we graded Lemon Balm's overall clinical evidence instead.

Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports Lemon Balm for:

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.
  • Since the label doesn't commit to one use, we graded the ingredient's overall clinical evidence instead.
  • On file: Herpes labialis (cold sores) — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).
  • On file: Depression — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).
  • On file: Stress — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).

Lemon balm is rated Possibly Effective for cold sores (herpes labialis) and for managing stress and depression. The evidence supporting these uses exists but is not definitive, so results can vary from person to person.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Lemon balm is generally well tolerated in the short term for most healthy adults, though high doses and long-term safety haven't been thoroughly studied. In trials, dizziness and sedation were reported but did not occur more often than placebo.

When applied topically as a cream for cold sores, a small number of people reported irritation or worsening of the sore, though these were rare and not more common than with placebo. During pregnancy, there isn't enough reliable safety data, so it's best avoided unless your doctor advises you otherwise.

While breastfeeding, safety information is limited—talk with your doctor before using. One isolated case reported heart rhythm changes and QT prolongation in someone using a multi-ingredient workout product containing lemon balm, but it's unclear whether lemon balm alone was responsible.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Lemon Balm.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 264 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before you take this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on any central nervous system depressants (sleeping pills, anti-anxiety drugs, narcotic painkillers, or sedating antidepressants)—lemon balm may add to their drowsy effects. Also confirm that it won't interfere with thyroid hormone replacement therapy if you take one.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

If you're managing stress, cold sores, or mild low mood and want to try a plant extract, lemon balm may be worth considering—though the evidence is modest. If you take sedating medications or thyroid replacement therapy, you'll want to check with your doctor or pharmacist first.

The short-term safety record is decent, but this isn't a long-term studied supplement. Have a conversation with your own healthcare provider before starting.
