Burdock is generally well tolerated when eaten as food and for short-term use in healthy adults, though human safety data are limited. Allergic reactions are rare but possible — they include contact dermatitis and, very rarely, anaphylaxis.

Skin reactions (contact dermatitis) have been reported, especially with prolonged use of burdock root oil or plasters, and can appear up to a week after first use. Don't use medicinal amounts of this product during pregnancy — safety data are lacking and burdock may affect the uterus.

Theoretically, taking burdock with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bleeding.

In vitro research shows that lignans from burdock reduce rabbit platelet aggregation by inhibiting platelet activating factor. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
