Carnosine Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Carnosine against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Carnosine by AFI America's Finest
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: carnosine, a dipeptide (a small protein-like compound made of two amino acids linked together) that your body naturally produces. Carnosine is found in muscle and brain tissue and has been studied for its potential effects on aging, muscle function, and brain health.
The capsule itself is made from gelatin and filled with inactive ingredients including stearic acid, dicalcium phosphate, magnesium stearate, and water — standard excipients that help form and preserve the capsule.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for carnosine is mixed and incomplete. For autism spectrum disorder, research suggests it's possibly ineffective.
For age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, cataracts, and general cognitive impairment, we don't have enough reliable evidence to rate whether it works. If you're considering this supplement for any of those uses, the data simply aren't there to support a clear answer yet.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Carnosine is generally well tolerated in short-term studies, though long-term safety information is limited. Some people have reported decreased appetite, dry mouth, small weight changes, foot and joint pain, and in one case pneumonia — though these reports are not common.
The safety data aren't sufficient for pregnancy or breastfeeding, so you should avoid this product if you're pregnant or nursing unless you've talked with your doctor or pharmacist first.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antidiabetes drugs for diabetes, check with your pharmacist before starting carnosine — it may lower your blood sugar further and increase the risk of going too low. Your doctor may need to monitor your blood sugar levels more closely or adjust your diabetes medication.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Carnosine may be worth considering if you're interested in aging or brain health, but the evidence for most uses is either absent or limited. If you take diabetes medication, you'll want to check with us before starting this supplement — the interaction with blood sugar is real and worth managing.
Talk to your pharmacist about whether this fits your situation.

Carnosine by AFI America's Finest Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Carnosine by AFI America's Finest has one documented interaction we need to flag.
It may increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) if you take antidiabetes drugs — the kind used for diabetes management. Some early research suggests carnosine might lower fasting blood sugar on its own, so combining it with diabetes medication could push your levels too low.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Although we've identified this interaction, long-term safety data for carnosine are limited, so there's more we don't know yet. Altogether, these interactions span 85 individual medications.
